Ozymandias

I feel like the poem “Ozymandias” by Mary Shelley sums up this global situation fairly well:

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

We keep this shit up (especially with climate change) and that ruined statue in the desert will be all that’s left of us.

The G7, the Bourgeoisie, and the Fate of Humanity

I don’t give a fuck if Trudeau and Boris are mocking Trump, they are not our friends. I just saw that video of the G7, such bourgeois decadence. The rich are not our friends, they are our enemy. We sit at the precipice of the literal fucking apocalypse, and they would rather save a few measly bucks than steer course and save the fucking fate of our entire species.

They continue to plunder our natural resources, they continue to exploit workers and the environment, they continue to use fossil fuels, the end is nigh and no carbon credit tax is gonna stop that. Instead it just engenders backlash as it puts the brunt on the poor, rather than the wealthy as they always do.

Death to the bourgeoisie, death to capitalism. If you want a future for your children and grandchildren abolish capitalism, the fate of humanity itself depends on it. Workers of the world, unite!

Explaining the Great Filter

http://mason.gmu.edu/~rhanson/greatfilter.html

The cited paper describes the hypothesis of “The Great Filter,” a
proposed explanation to Fermi’s Paradox, and the explanation I find the
most compelling. According to a hypothesis there is a Filter causing
potential civilizations to never attain interstellar colonization, but
where exactly this Filter lies is unknown.

If the Filter lies past us, if say, the Filter is the chance for life to originate then we’ve long
since past the Filter and have nothing to worry about, but if life is
common in the universe (this is the reason why some scientists dread
discovering alien life on Mars and Europa) then we haven’t reached the
Filter yet, and therefore have reason to fear.

In line with this hypothesis any positive result we get from SETI would be bad news, for
it means that since life is common, especially intelligent life, that
the Filter therefore lies ahead of us, and any negative results we get
from SETI are good news, for the Filter is long behind us.

Given the likelihood that we are not alone in the universe, what this means is that we have reason to fear for our future, and given that we are currently bombarding ourselves with a number of different threats (nuclear Armageddon and global warming being the two foremost threats we are currently subjecting ourselves to), the Great Filter may not lay that far off in our future.
